Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top TEN Series I’ve Given Up On/Don’t Plan to Finish.
This is a great topic. It also makes me take a look at where I’m at. I hope to be real with myself! 🙂
1. The House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast.
-I just can’t and won’t. I got far in the series but it really went down hill and I completely grew out of it. This was just over a decade ago for me.
2. White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter
-I liked the first book and was planning on continuing but then I started to hear a lot of mixed reviews. I’m just not going to touch this one.
3. The Hybrid Chronicles by Kat Zhang
4. Graceling Realm Series by Kristin Cashore
-I know that I’m going to be in a minority here but I really didn’t like the first two books in this series. I have the third book on e-book and I know that I’m just never going to do it. I didn’t really like the previous two, so I just can’t.
5. The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee
-I read the first book and it was okay. Not enough greatness there to have me continuing the series.
6. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
-Okay, I enjoyed the first book but I’ve heard and read so many bad things about book two. I decided not to continue it since then. I mean there’s just so much to read. Now, here’s the thing. How was the series after book 2?? Did it get better? Is this a series that I need to re-think and just read it?? Please, let me know.
7. Millennium series by David Lagercrantz (not LARSSON)
-I have read the first 4 books and I LOVED the first 3. The first 3 books were written by Stieg Larsson, who has passed away. David Lagercrantz has decided to pick up the series, even though there was controversy. He did a crap job. It’s nowhere near the books I loved. There is no way I will be finishing this series.
8. Mara Dyer/ Noah Shaw Confessions by Michelle Hodkin
-I read the Mara Dyer series and the last book was an epic flop for me. I really disliked it, which was so sad. I had loved the series until that point. There’s just no way that I can pick up this companion series- Noah Shaw Confessions.
9. Maddox Brothers by Jamie McGuire
-I’ve read the first 3 books in this series and I just couldn’t do it anymore. I will never be finishing this series and seeing how all these brothers make out. I actually think that I won’t be reading anymore of Jamie McGuire books.
10. The Giver by Lois Lowry
-I read the first two books. I liked the first a lot more than the second. I think that’s where I will stop with this series.
11. This one is just for fun.. maybe
– Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
-I just don’t know. There’s supposed to be two more books. He will never finish writing them. I honestly just don’t think he can. I don’t know that I will want to read them. I’m so annoyed with the false release dates. Plus, I didn’t even finish his last book. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried and I’ve only made it about half way through. I did this one as a joke because, of course I’m going to finish it. Now, that I’m being honest with myself. I just don’t know that I will.
What series are you not finishing? Is it because you don’t want to or your preferences have changed? Are any of them on my list? It makes me sad because I have this “incomplete” feeling but sometimes you just have to let go. Some of these series have been on my list for years.
Ooh Graceling and The Thousandth Floor is on my TBR, but I’ve just never gotten to it. Honestly I’ve forgotten everything about the Red Queen series and don’t know if i should continue.

I think that I enjoyed The Thousandth Floor more than Graceling. I just could not get into those books!! Haha, if it’s that forgettable, maybe I shouldn’t continue the Red Queen! 🙂

I totally agree about the Millennium series and I don’t think I want to continue with the Red Queen series, either. The reviews I’ve seen of the later books are just so bad.

Yes!! I feel horrible because I kind of want to see the movie. HAH! I just loved Claire Foy in The Crown on Netflix. I kind of want to see what she does with the character. The trailer seemed somewhat entertaining.
Yeah, I never picked up another book in the Red Queen series and it might have been a great decision. lol

I would love to know how the movie is! I hated the book but I can see how it would be more interesting on screen.

Yeah, I saw a trailer when we were watching Incredibles 2. Looked interesting!

I haven’t read ANY of these series…except the first two books in Larsson’s Millennium series. I guess I’m glad I didn’t start any of these.

Well, me too! This way you saved yourself some trouble 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Laurel!

I gave up on Graceling after the first book, I just didn’t like it at all. I also gave up on Red Queen, I struggled so much with Glass Sword that I didn’t want to try to continue!

Yes, I had SO much trouble with Graceling but forced myself because so many people loved it. Why??? Good to know! I am not kicking myself for abandoning Red Queen!

I honestly have no idea-I was the same way, I forced myself to finish it. Yeah, don’t, it’s not worth it.

King’s Cage isn’t bad. I actually enjoyed it. War Storm? Nope. Not reading that again.

haha. Oh boy! Is it the story, the writing or characters that didn’t work?

I liked the characters, especially Evangeline (who knew I’d like her?!). The writing is great, but I feel the book could have been cut down by 200 pages. Too dense for my liking. And I hated the ending, unfortunately. A lot of storylines are left unfinished.

When the ending is horrible, it’s so disappointing. Especially, since you put in all that time. Maybe she was hoping to do a bunch of spin off series with the unfinished story lines?

I heard from the Toronto tour stop that she’s planning on doing that. But that execution just doesn’t serve the readers very well.

Yeah, that doesn’t really make good sense. Sigh…

Okay so Red Queen is on my list too… I enjoyed book one and then book two was just okay and then book three was even worse then book two & I called it. I’ve heard mixed things about the last book but it’s like 800 pages long so I don’t think I have it in me… 😀

Umm…800 pages for a final book when the rest of the series has been subpar?! No thanks! Good decision on not picking that one up!! I think I’m just going with my gut and leaving this series on my do not finish! :):)

I’ve only ever read The Giver and I never really felt the need to keep reading the series – kind of like A Wrinkle in Time. I’m fine with stopping after the first. 🙂

Yeah, you don’t need to continue after The Giver! Sometimes I think authors rely on series too much when they should just stop after book one! 🙂

I don’t think I’ll start the Noah Shaw books. Not sure they were necessary?

Totally agree! I don’t know much about them but I can’t think they are any good.

I’ve only read the Song of Ice and Fire, although who knows when it will be finished… if he doesn’t hurry up, his estate is going to end up having a ghost writer finish it for him.
I haven’t read the Red Queen yet, but I’m on the waiting list at the library for it. Hopefully I’ll like it better than you did.

Yeah, I don’t know that it will ever get finished. I might just stick with the show ending and let it go. I’m just not sure that he can finish.
I really liked Red Queen but I’ve only read the fist book. I’ve heard a lot of not so good things about the rest of the series. I hope you enjoy it though!
