Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

Darkdawn (The Nevernight Chronicle, #3)

😥 😥 I am so very sad that this was only a 3/5 star book for me. Ugh, this was a long one for me. I want to thank St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan for providing me an e-ARC of this through Edelweiss +. I am sorry that it took so long to read and review this!

I want to start off by saying that the first 21% of this book was when my son was a newborn. I had a terrible time getting into the plot and kept falling asleep. I’m not sure if it’s the plot or because I was always sleep deprived. I put it down until this week. I am in the unpopular opinion here. Trust me, it hurts me so very much that this book didn’t live up to my standards. I loved and gave the first two books 5 stars! This was one of my most anticipated books last year.

I still had trouble getting into this book until past 50% of the book. I just felt like there wasn’t really much going on the first half of this book. There were so many unnecessary things that it was kind of boring. Basically, there’s just a lot of travel and not too much else going on. Once we get past this point, things start to happen and the last half was much easier to read. It was still so slow paced.

Of course, I loved reading more about all of my favorite characters. I did love that we got to know more about characters from previous books. It was so awesome to fall in love with them and then they die on like the next page. ha-ha! I should know better with Mr. Kristoff! Although, guys… I was a bit disappointed in Ash’s character. I feel like she lost herself in Mia in this book.

Overall, my feelings are… I’m completely unsatisfied. I feel like it was missing so much magic or wow factor, like the first two books. I wasn’t shocked by anything and really bored for most of this book. I was so nervous when he took an extra year to finish this book. Mr. Kristoff, you added way too much to this one! I still love this series but this was not my favorite of the series.
