I have seen this everywhere the last few months. I signed up for Book of the Month and added it to my order. I’m so glad I did. I’ve been reading a lot of middle grade and needed a romance/contemporary to break it up.
This is such a fast paced book. I started it Monday night and finished it Tuesday afternoon! This was only during my sons sleep time, so it’s a fast one. I loved the story so much. These two characters who have had such different life experiences and are both in a broken way.
Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope right now. I’ve been loving it because the banter is AMAZING most of the time. This book did not disappoint! I found myself laughing out loud a lot. It is so witty and it never feels like its trying to hard.
This isn’t just a typical romance novel because this book delves into a lot of dark things. The relationship between January and her father is so intense and so heartbreaking. We also get a really dark past with Gus and it will also break your heart. There’s a lot of dark and intense things going on but it’s done in a way that doesn’t bring you down. Characters were just written so brilliantly! They are pretty much opposites but looking for the same thing.
One of the things that I really enjoyed was the note writing. My husband and I still do it often because a text message just isn’t the same. Just a random thing I liked.
The only thing that I didn’t really like was how fast the ending happened. I feel like WAY too many things happen in the last 60 pages and we needed a lot more pages. It felt really rushed and I wanted more time. It’s the only reason this isn’t a 5 star read for me!
Overall, I loved this a lot. If you liked The Unhoneymooners, I think you will like this one too. The romance is so angst-y and really enjoyable. There’s a lot of intense things in this book, so beware of that. It’s not just a “fluffy” romance novel. Also, a small tidbit, don’t be fooled by the cover. It doesn’t quite match what it’s on the inside. It’s not a bad thing just a bit puzzling.
