I. AM. SHOCKED. This is probably my least favorite C.C. book to date. I just checked- I’m rating this one the lowest of them all. Honestly, I had the biggest and highest expectations! One of my most anticipated releases because I love Cassandra and the Shadowhunter world. There were so many rave reviews and my highest rated on Goodreads (after book 2 in the Stormlight series). I think starting this right after finishing, The Way of Kings, was part of the problem. I went from an epic adult high fantasy to YA.
I had such a hard time getting into this book. I was so excited about the spin-off from the Clockwork series. I loved that series so much! I think the biggest issue was that she was introducing so many characters at once. It took so long for me to figure out who was who and what was going on. Usually, there’s a clear cut main character or two plus supporting. This book had a bunch of people vying to be main characters. It made things a little muddy and harder to connect.
One of my biggest issues with this book was the love drama. I kept rolling my eyes and thinking, “are you kidding me?! Is this a time to be daydreaming and thinking about how gold someone’s eyes are?!” For example, this was said a few times in similar ways…
“He was very handsome, Cordelia thought; she didn’t know why she didn’t respond to him as she did to James. But then, she didn’t respond to anyone as she did to James.”PAGE 359!!
This was almost 400 pages in. Yes, we get it- he’s so handsome. *rolls eyes* It was all of them! It was like a bunch of love sick kids and that’s the main focus for majority of this book. I also despise the fact that there are several love “triangles” in this book.
The plot was slow. It took so long to get anywhere and this is such a chunky book. Since I was getting so annoyed with the dramatics it made this book feel like it would take forever to finish. There wasn’t as much action as I expect to find in a Shadowhunter book. It was about the last 250 pages that really got my attention and things started to happen to keep me interested. This book is almost 600 pages… that’s not great.
At around the half way mark, there were a few character that I absolutely fell in love with (finally!). I loved Anna and I really hope that we get a lot more of her. I also really need to know more about Matthew. We’ve got a bit of something tragic going on there. Cordelia is such a great character. I love how her main goal is to save her family but she ends up being such a bada$$ in this book. She is so sweet and loyal but will not back down from a fight. I also loved that we learn so much more about Cortana- such power and so much foreshadowing. I can’t wait to find out more about that!
The ending of this book is what saved it for me. It was really good, although a bit predictable. It opens up for a lot more fun in the next book and I really can’t wait to read that one. I’m hoping that since I know the characters a bit better things will fall into place a lot quicker in the next book.
Even though, I struggled with this book for a long time, I did enjoy the ending and where things landed. I will read the next book because I am really excited about some things that I hope to see play out. I tend to think if this book was about 200 pages shorter, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. It’s not a terrible read.. it’s just long and the payoff takes a while.
