Review: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic

Title: Mexican Gothic

Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Publisher: Del Rey

Pages: 320

This is not my typical genre but it sounded so intriguing and there was a lot of buzz around it. I ended up picking it as my BoTM selection. I have some mixed feelings about it. I enjoyed it but there’s a lot of things that were so very gross.

This was a very slow start. It was more than half way before I really got pulled into the story. I think if it were shorter that it would have been a bit better.

I did like Noemi because she wouldn’t let anyone push her around. She was her own independent person and that was refreshing. Although, at times it felt like she was a bit rude. I do get that if she did follow the rules she would never have a chance to make it.

This book was creepy and there are so may gross scenes that made me queasy. I think I’m a bit haunted by some of them. It’s really the reason I just stay away from horror.

Overall, I was a bit grossed out but I did enjoy most of the second half. Most of the characters were kind of bland, the plot was slow, and it’s kind of gross. If you like horror it might be up your alley though.

  1. I hate horror if it’s psycho killers and blood etc, but for some reason gothic fiction doesn’t freak me out as much! I think it goes back to my love of ghost stories as a child. Sorry this one wasn’t to your taste. I can totally understand how it could deeply unsettle you ❤️💙💖💛💜🧡💝💚

  2. I DNF this book due to the slow pacing of the beginning. I so desperately wanted to like it more, though!

Thanks for the heads up about the gross scenes later on.

  3. Ah, sorry to hear that this one just wasn’t for you. I’ve seen it everywhere and honestly it’s so far out of my comfort zone (gothic horror, ghosty? things) that I’m hesitant to pick it up but also FOMO? Lol all the reviews I’ve seen of it have been so over the moon about it and so it’s refreshing to see your take. I’ll definitely keep this in mind whenever I get this book.

    • Yes!! It was EVERYWHERE. It was an option for BoTM and I decided to go with it but it’s so far out of my comfort zone too. I wanted to just go with it. It just has some really gross parts. I did like most of it but I don’t think I’d ever re-read this. I did see they are going to make it into a show.. so there’s that. lol
