Mini-Reviews: The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa, We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal, & The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater!

Time has gotten away from me and I’m so behind on reviews. So here are some fantasy mini-reviews for you!

I’m really enjoying this series. I think I would have loved it a lot more back in my young YA vampire days. haha. I think we spend too much time traveling and not enough time in the action. I don’t think it really falls into the sequel slump but it’s a bit slower than the first book. We really do take a lot of time to get to know the characters, which I loved. Jackal was a fun addition and really kept this book entertaining without going too dark. I love how Alli is constantly battling to keep a hold of her humanity. She really shows the struggle and how easy it is to cross that line. I really love Kanin! He’s the calm to all the crazy, haha. The ending of this book is epic and I can’t wait to jump into book three.

I buddy read this with Dini and Julie and it was a blast! It was our first trio buddy read and not our last. We all rated this the same, I think? The buddy read aspect always helps me enjoy a book more! I can see why this book has a lot of hype. The enemies to lovers, romance is stellar. It does take a while to get there but it is agonizing. There are a lot of intense moments in this book that I was not expecting. The ending is WOW! I did find some issues that I could be nitpicky about but I really enjoyed my time with it and we are going with that. Weare picking up book 2 next month and I cannot wait!!

Okay, this was a buddy read with Dini and a re-read for me. I will say that I did like it better than the first time I read this, 8 years ago. It could be because I buddy read it, which really helps me enjoy a book more. lol. Just like last time, I was confused by the ending. Things escalate but then we kind of just jump forward in time and things are fine? It didn’t make sense and it was quite jarring. I still like most of the characters but I really hope we learn more about them in the future, especially Ronin. I’m a little confused on why so many people LOVE this series but maybe it happens further in the books? I need more and I really hope that we don’t have a love triangle going forward but it might be that way. I have to remember that it was quite popular back then. Dini and I are going to pick up book two in May, I think.

  1. I had to look it up, but apparently I gave The Raven Boys 6/7 stars (equivalent to 4 1/2 stars, but I’m extra 🀣) when I read it five years ago. I am not sure I would give that now. I just remember really enjoying it at the time and liking the fact that everything was a bit weird. I did finish the series and from what I can see I rated all the books equally, apart from book 3, which I didn’t like as much. Wo knows what I would think nowπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ .

I need to read We Hunt The Flame – it’s on my shelves waiting to be read!

    • You know, my reading has changed immensely over the years. I’m sure yours has too so don’t do a re-read!! hahaha!! If I would have continued this series back then, I might have liked it a lot more, overall. I’m curious to see how the rest of it goes. I feel the same way about re-reading many other series that I read long ago. Mostly, YA bc I have a harder time with YA these days.

I hope you get to We Hunt the Flame and you enjoy it! πŸ™‚

      • So true! I struggle with YA these days. I read a couple of good ones, but for the most part it does not work for me anymore. I mostly stick to adult books, but every now and then… you know… πŸ˜‚

  2. My daughter binged on We Hunt the Flame and its sequel last summer. She loved both. Wish you would have enjoyed The Raven Boys more, but curious to think that maybe I would feel differently about it if I read it now.

  4. I remember loving Stiefvater’s series, but honestly it’s been so long since I’ve read it that I couldn’t say what I loved about it. I might have to do a reread myself. I hope the second book gets better for you and Dini!
